Money Magazine kicked off the New Year with an article titled “10 things you’ll pay more for in 2013“. Here are the health-related things on the list and how to manage:
- “Steak, hamburgers and bacon” (although the article notes that it’s “most meat products”). Here’s a tip: most Americans plates are out of balance–heavy on the meat, light on everything else. If you could reduce your meat portion to 1/4 of the plate or less, you could probably be eating grassfed animals from an organic and animal welfare certified farmer (find one at EatWild) and not even see a difference in what you’re paying for meat since the cost increase is largely due to corn feed prices.
- “Milk, cheese and eggs” – Why not try going dairy-free? Or significantly reduced? You’ll get as much calcium from a glass of OJ fortified with calcium and Vitamin D as a glass of milk–with the added benefit of some “uptake enhancers” in the OJ. Believe it or not, kale and spinach are LOADED with calcium. (See the last paragraph of this blog entry for how to cook anything you can’t identify)
- “Healthcare” – This one is going to be big, and frankly our family has seen it increase yearly. So stay healthy. Click here for my Gimme5 series that includes tip sheets on Preventing/Fighting Illness and Eating Whole Foods (which contributes to staying healthy).
Of course, if you need help, I’m here. I’ve also added some short-term, self-guided (but with a one-on-one coaching session to tie things together) One Month Mini Makeover (“Ommm”) programs to help you bridge the gap between tip sheets and full-on coaching. The range of topics is pretty broad and growing. Check ’em out!
Be well!
